As a follow up of a previous letter I sent to Your Episcopal Conference, I would like to ask again for your your support and participation in the celebration of the "Day of Conscience" on June 17.
Three years ago, on June 17 2020, His Holiness Pope Francis, after mentioning that Day as “The Day of Conscience”, encouraged “every Christian to give the example of the consistency of an upright conscience enlightened by the Word of God”.
There is a reason to remember and celebrate June 17 as the Day of Conscience in the world, a project I am involved with since 2004, on the 50th anniversary of the death of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, whose name and courage were recalled by His Holiness on the same day of June 17 2020.
On June 17 1940, in the middle of the World War II, the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux, France, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, disobeying his government but obeying his CATHOLIC CONSCIENCE, decided to give transit visas, and thus saving their lives, to many thousands of people fleeing ahead of the Nazi army occupying France, many of them Jews. For this Consul Sousa Mendes was dismissed from the diplomatic corp and died in poverty on April 3, 1954.
Greatly encouraged by Pope Francis and emboldened by His words, we want to continue promoting the “Day od Conscience” as we believe that the Catholic Church should lead this renaissance movement for a better world, promoting this idea of conscience awareness and the duty of every single one of us to accept and follow it as a way to address the many problems afflicting our world.
Because June 17 falls on a weekday most of the time, we asked about the possibility of an advanced reminder by dioceses to the parishes to prevent this date from being forgotten and the consequent absence of any conscience awareness effort.
With this in mind we are asking Your Excellence to contact and encourage the dioceses of your jurisdiction to participate in this movement. If we want a better world than the one we are experiencing everywhere, this is a must.
I am sending this letter to all Episcopal Conferences around the world, for I am confident and do not doubt that, as it has happened in years past , it will be well received and given favorable consideration.
Grateful in advance and looking forward to the favor of a kind reply from Your Excellence confirming receipt of this letter, I am
Yours in Christ,
